Hollywood has always evolved alongside technology. Sound transformed silent cinema. Color changed visual storytelling. Digital effects expanded what filmmakers could put on screen. Streaming rewrote how audiences consume entertainment.

Now Hollywood is confronting another transformation: artificial intelligence.

Across the entertainment industry, AI-powered tools are increasingly becoming part of conversations surrounding filmmaking, television, visual effects, post-production, marketing and content development. Generative technology can assist with everything from concept development and previsualization to image creation, editing and other production workflows.

But the technology is creating questions just as quickly as it creates possibilities.

Consent, Compensation and Likeness

For actors, writers, directors, studios and other creative professionals, the rise of AI has intensified debates surrounding consent, compensation, copyright and ownership. The ability to digitally reproduce a performer’s image or voice has made protections surrounding digital likeness especially important.

The issue became a major part of Hollywood’s labor conversation during the 2023 strikes, when writers and performers pushed for protections governing how artificial intelligence could be used in their work. Those negotiations made one thing clear: AI was no longer a distant technological possibility. It had become an immediate business and labor issue for the entertainment industry.

The Tools Keep Advancing

At the same time, the technology continues to advance.

Generative video systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated, while production companies and technology developers continue experimenting with ways AI can complement traditional filmmaking. For independent creators, some of these tools could eventually lower barriers to producing ambitious visual content that previously required significantly larger budgets and production teams.

That possibility could create opportunities for a new generation of filmmakers.

The Real Question

But Hollywood’s AI transition will ultimately be defined by more than what the technology can create. The larger question is how the entertainment industry chooses to use it.

The future may not be a competition between human creativity and artificial intelligence. Instead, the defining challenge could be determining where technology enhances the creative process — and where the human voice, performance and imagination must remain irreplaceable.

Hollywood has reinvented itself many times before.

The AI era may become its next major transformation.
