Some artists release music that captures a moment.

Others build catalogs that eventually become records of an entire era.

For more than three decades, Jay-Z’s music has existed somewhere between the two. His records have chronicled ambition, survival, competition, wealth, family, vulnerability and reinvention while hip-hop itself transformed from a culture fighting for recognition into one of the most powerful forces in global entertainment.

Now, he is going back to the music.

HBO’s upcoming eight-part documentary series “Jay-Z in 8” brings Jay-Z together with producer and record executive Rick Rubin for conversations centered on songs from throughout his catalog.

The first two episodes are scheduled to premiere September 18 on HBO and HBO Max. Two additional episodes will arrive each Friday through the October 9 finale.

But the release schedule isn’t what makes this project particularly interesting.

It is the decision to let the songs lead the conversation.

Eight Chapters, One Catalog

Throughout the eight chapters, Jay-Z and Rubin will revisit records including “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “This Can’t Be Life,” “99 Problems,” “Dead Presidents II,” “The Story of O.J.,” “Family Feud” and others.

Those songs were created by different versions of the same man.

There was the young artist determined to make himself impossible to ignore.

Then came the superstar navigating what happens when ambition actually works.

The businessman pushing against expectations of what a rapper could own, build and become.

And later, the husband and father willing to put vulnerability, mistakes and complicated personal truths into the music.

Time Changes Context

Listening to those records decades later creates a different conversation.

Because time changes context.

A lyric written during struggle can sound different after success.

A declaration of ambition can take on another meaning once the goal has been achieved.

And a song created simply to survive a moment can eventually become part of cultural history.

That is also what makes Rick Rubin an intriguing person to sit across from Jay-Z.

Rubin’s career stretches across generations and genres, and his work with artists has frequently centered on stripping away distractions and examining what exists underneath the music.

With Jay-Z, that conversation has the potential to become something larger than nostalgia.

Who Gets to Tell the Story

Hip-hop has now reached an age where many of the artists who shaped its history are able to participate in documenting that history themselves.

That matters.

For decades, musicians have watched their careers eventually become documentaries, biographies and retrospectives interpreted largely through the eyes of other people.

“Jay-Z in 8” presents another possibility:

The artist can return to the work himself.

He can listen again.

He can reconsider what it meant.

And he can participate in telling the story of the person who created it.

Success has a way of changing how the world remembers someone.

Music preserves something different.

It preserves the person who existed before everyone knew how the story would end.

This fall, Jay-Z is opening that archive.

And this time, he gets to help explain what was really there.
