Taylor Swift is set to make MTV Video Music Awards history once again — this time for her work behind the camera.
CBS and MTV announced on September 21 that Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, introducing a new distinction recognizing music artists whose directorial work has helped advance music video and visual storytelling.
The honor places a spotlight on an increasingly significant part of Swift’s career: her evolution from recording artist and songwriter into a filmmaker and visual storyteller.
Swift has built an extensive body of directorial work across her music videos and short-form films, developing a visual language that frequently incorporates narrative storytelling, symbolism, cinematic imagery and recurring details connected to her music.
Her directing credits include projects such as “The Man,” “cardigan,” “willow,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Fortnight (feat. Post Malone),” “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault),” “Karma (feat. Ice Spice)” and “Lavender Haze,” among others.
According to CBS and MTV, Swift is a seven-time VMA Best Director nominee and four-time winner.
The creation of the Artist Director Honors also reflects the changing role of recording artists in contemporary music. Increasingly, artists are participating not only in the creation of their music, but also in determining how that music is translated visually — from concept development and directing to larger cinematic worlds surrounding individual projects.
For Swift, that relationship between music and visual storytelling has become an increasingly prominent element of her creative work.
The inaugural honor recognizes that body of work and the role artist-directors can play in shaping how audiences experience music beyond the recording itself.
